It happens all over the world, waves that communities grow up riding, are destroyed. Waves shared with friends after long days at work or teaching their kids how to surf just like maybe there parents did, are wiped out, by poor decisions made by disconnected authorities. Surfing is not just a sport, it is a unique connection to nature, shared by a common thread around the world of people who know how lucky they are to share this unique connection.
Sweden is by no means a surfers paradise, growing up in South Africa if we saw a good day by Swedish standards we would make other plans than surfing that day. But that is something that is special about the Swedish surfer, they may just be the most commited and at the same time frustrated surfers on the planet.
Waves are scarce but when they come around you are gauranteed to see heaps of smiling faces in the lineup that have been patiently watching the weather forecast dreaming of a couple of waves.
I find it extremely hard to believe that a government body would approve of the construction of a jetty for the purpose of bathing that would effectively wreck one of Swedens best waves, and yet they have. Going against the ruling of county administrative board, the local government of Höganäs, who should know what a gem this wave is to the area have decided to call in the bulldozers.
The amount of quality waves in Sweden… not many. Amount of places to swim in Sweden, not a problem. Definitely not in such demand that you need to use municipality money that would be better put to use by protecting our natural swimming areas, the ones not formed by concrete and bulldozers. The Swedish coast is as beautiful as it can be when the only interference by government is to keep it as natural as possible.
The Another poor decision by people who if they knew the joy that this wave has and will bring to so many people would not be making. How many more times do we have to save Mölle. This destructive decision needs to be STOPPED once and for all.
Höganäs kommun insists that the wave will not be affected, however they did not consult all affected parties and can the money better be used to the benefit of nature, definitely.
