Billabong Pro at Jeffreys Bay 2010 was definately a big one for South Africa and for South African surfers. Held over 4 days the Billabong did more than just entertain the masses of people with the best surfing in the world at one of the best waves in the world. It also promoted an eco friendly apporoach to event organisation, from compostable cups to solar energy. The Billabong also joined hands with locals in protesting the proposed Nuclear Power station at Thuyspunt which would be a disaster if it ever got approval, chokka fishing boats pulled up into the lineup to show their support for the protest during the competition.
Back to the surfing the biggest upsets of the contest had to come from local Shaun Holmes who took out Kelly Slater and Andy Irons with his powerfull carves and experienced tuberiding. He made it all the way to the quarter finals where he lost marginally to Australian Bede Durbidge. Jordy Smith shone throughout the entire competition, almost getting knocked out in the semi’s only to catch two smaller waves in the dying minutes of the heat to take out Bede Durbidge. In the final Jordy applied the pressure early against Adam Melling, with an 8.9 and an 8.3. Pulling supermans and airs like he was freesurfing his homebreak.
