What made you decide to pursue wedding/engagement photography?
I saw an advert for an assistant for a wedding photography agency. I looked up their website and liked their style – very photojournalistic, lots of black and white, I felt my work could relate to that, although I had never photographed a wedding before. I went for an interview and got the job. After the first wedding I loved it. What I love about weddings is the different locations, and the fact that each one is completely different to the other. I love the joy and emotions and capturing those in each wedding. It give some great pleasure and I find all the different locations very inspiring.
Did you assist other photographers when you started out?
I assisted for about 2 seasons then slowely started on my own. After 3 years I went solo.
You have a very artistic and unique style, what inspires you?
My work has always been artistic, even before I started wedding photography. I come from an artistic family and I trained my eye from a very young age. I have always loved art and going to museums and exhibitions. At a younger age I loved Dali, Klimt, and photographers I always admired have been Edward Weston, Francesca Woodman, Cindy Sherman ….. my favourite wedding photographers are Elisabeth Messina, Joe Buissink and Gordon Jovic. I believe all their work says something and has meaning, besides being artistic. I try and do the same with my work. I strongly believe that images should show emotions.
Have you had a wedding thats really stood out for you, with regards to location
Yes. Last year I photographed a wedding in Armenia out of all places. It is a country I never thought I would visit and it was one fo the best trips I have any made. THe ceremony took place in an ancient monastery from the AD period, and it was gregorian armenian tradition with monks giving the ceremony. We also did a 5 day tour of the country which I documented for the couple, it was a fantastic trip and such an interesting country. It felt like being back in biblical times.
What lenses and camera do you use the majority of the time
I only use Nikon. I have 2 D700 bodies and usually have 2 different lenses on each. I love my prime lenses and mostly use the 50mm 1.4 and the 105mm 2.8. I will alternate between the 24-70mm and 14-24mm as a general lens, depending on the location and subject matter.
