Life is all about taking chances, chances in careers, chances with sports, chances with love.. if you don’t take chances you’ll never know.
Gerhard Engelbrecht took a chance to move to Indonesia, originally from South Africa he is now living in the worlds surfing mecca where he shoots surf photography for a living. He took time to answer 5 quick questions.

What made you want to pursue a career in photography?

Since I started surfing I was always captivated and inspired by surf imagery. This drives me to share the surfing lifestyle via photography.

What kind of work were you shooting in south africa?
I was shooting a lot of bands, live and group shots, then more skateboarding and eventually into my first love: surf photography.

You’ve made a move to indonesia.. how did that decision come about?
I felt being based in Indonesia would be the most efficient location for surf photography because it’s an absolute surf mecca and most of the worlds top competing pro’s and free surfers visit Indonesia each year. I also Love warm weather and warm ocean water.

Who or what inspires you in your personal and photographic life?
My personal life inspirations come from so many avenues. I’ve read a lot of literature on consciousness and spirituality. This strongly influences my values and way of Being. I believe in Unity and I Trust in The Universe and the Magical Flow that is always present when I’m being present and doing what I Love to do.

The photographic inspirations also span many talented artists and peers. A few names: Chase Jarvis, Jason Childs, Ansel Adams, Ray Collins, Mick Curley…..the list goes on 🙂 I’m also inspired by interesting light, painting, films etc…

What would you do if you could’nt be a photographer?
A professional, nomadic free surfer.
